If we miss what Jesus says at the end of the Sermon on the Mount, we miss everything that Jesus has said between chapter 5 and here. Remembering last week (v. 22) Christ said that many will say on that day- ‘ Lord! Lord! ‘ this describes people not only who may not be in the covenant community but folks who are in church every Sunday and part of the covenant community. He says all the right things, seems to say the right things every week and to the naked eye, this individual looks like he is truly a Christian. The fact is, he really a deceiver and he has deceived himself. He has believed his own lie.

People often think that because they said a prayer that their name is on the heavenly roll – but this actually is nothing more than trusting in our own words rather than in the finished work of Christ as evidence of our salvation. Thus, Christ (and Paul) constantly tell us to examine ourselves to see if we are in the faith. Why? False faith not only fools those on the outside – it fools us as well.
