Chapters 1-8 of Proverbs and chapter 31 serve as ‘bookends’ to the entire book of wisdom. Many people think of Proverbs 31 as speaking of the qualities of a good woman and wife, but upon closer examination, the text is shown to be talking about the personification of wisdom, not just a woman. Dr. VanGemeren walks us through the text and provides insight into this well-loved passage.
When there are times that we feel like we are in the wilderness, it is those times when we see the great power of the Lord. Israel had this demonstrated to them both during their time in Egypt as well as immediately after they crossed the Red Sea. Exodus 15 meets them there.
Many people will claim that Jesus lives and that He is risen, but what does that mean for the believer? What implications and applications do the resurrection of Christ have for me? Today, we want to think on three questions: 1. What happened at the resurrection of Jesus Christ (besides Him just getting up and walking out of the tomb)? 2. What is happening NOW because of the resurrection of Christ? 3. What WILL happen in the future because of the resurrection of Christ?
Thinking of evil in the world, we sometimes wonder why ‘bad things’ happen to good people. We do this ignorantly – never really thinking of what happens to ‘bad people’, what ‘bad’ is or who ‘bad people’ are. Humanity’s ‘badness’ has affected every part of the creation and slowly drives it closer to ruin. To bring back purity, one must either remove the infection or toss out the creation. Since God isn’t going to toss out the creation…guess who’s got to go. Psalm 9:3-10 deal with God’s coming judgment on the unrighteous.
The world typically does not take justice seriously. Psalm 9 is a call to praise God for His present justice in the earth and for His final coming judgment on sin. Verses 1 and 2 call on God in four ways in prayer and thanksgiving as we begin to study this remarkable song of praise.
